I gave that a try, i'll try again.
I also tried heating the head, no dice.
You're right on the randomness with glue, my TFA Grimlock had a glued shoulder.

Rodimus's head came apart right away when I unscrewed it. However, it's not unheard of for some parts on figures to be glued together where others aren't. If that's the case, you've probably just got some glue along the outer seams, and if you take a thin flat head screw driver or a knife, you can work your way along the seam and eventually pop the head apart.

I unscrewed Rodimus' head, but it doesn't seem to come apart. How did you crack it open?

It really all depends on what parts you use. For instance, I used energon Rodimus's head as the other end of the joint on the other end because I had it on hand and because it turned out to be really convenient. If you're going that route, you might want to just use Rodimus's ball, as it's made to fit that joint. I didn't because it was bright orange, but it's not that bad.

If you don't even have energon Rodimus, well then see if there's something on Wreckage that you could use. Basically it just has to be something that can fit up into Ironhide's head and have a balljoint on a post. Those are the only requirements.

These guides are meant to get you familiar with modding and encourage you to do your own, so just think about it and then try stuff out.

Had a quick question for this step. You said you used Cybertron Swerve for his ball joint for Ironhide's head. Do you have any other 'bots that might work? I don't have/can't find a Cybertron Swerve at the usual stores, and my wife won't let me buy one from the webz just to rip him apart.
I've got an extra Bayformer Wreckage toy and he's got ball joints for his shoulders and his head. Think those might work?
